Party madness this past Friday evening as my husband Lars DJ’d at his monthly residency at Moonshadows in Malibu. (Name sound familiar? Well, Moonshadows is the restaurant/bar where Mel Gibson was partying it up the night of his infamous run in with Malibu police a couple years ago.) This spot is always great times..outdoor deck lounge overlooking the pacific ocean, the crowd, amazing food, stiff drinks and of course the MUSIC.

We started by sitting outside at a table on the deck, overlooking the ocean, and enjoyed an incredible gourmet dinner from the Moonshadows restaurant. And then Lars got behind the DJ decks, dropping some sweet music to start out the beautiful early evening. Soon after his guest DJ for the evening, our very good friend Tony Watson and his lovely wife Angie showed up. Tony is one of my favorite DJ’s in LA and listening to him play is always a treat. Both Tony and Lars dropped some serious dope records throughout the night, never staying within a specific genre or style. As the night went on the place became more and more packed and soon the party was jumping and getting crazy. People were dancing, singing out loud and screaming. I’ve never seen Moonshadows get that nutty. All in all..although I was having a sober evening, (Lars drank plenty for the both of us… haha! ) I had a seriously good time and met some great new people.

Click on the image mosaic above and it will take you to my flickr set of all the photos both me and Lars took. Or you can view the slideshow.

available_soon_banner.gifAvailable very soon will be the limited edition T-shirts I designed for Deeper Shades of House, my husband Lars Behrenroth’s radio show and website. Deeper Shades of House (DSOH) is entering its 5th year on XM satellite radio and is now syndicated on numerous other FM and online stations globally. It’s very fulfilling to know that so many people worldwide have become devoted fans of the show and tune in weekly or download the DSOH podcast. Lars has put a lot of hard work and creative energy into his show and music, and has always remained humble and appreciative to his fans.
These premiere DSOH t-shirts will be limited edition as we have printed a very limited number of them. And, because they are printed with a unique technique called discharge printing. It’s not really a print, but more a process where the color of the shirt is extracted to create the design, similar to bleaching.

I’ll post another update here as soon as they are available for purchase, which should be as early as next week.

I know I’ve been lacking on posts…so sorry! I’ve been traveling a lot..Just this past month I’ve been to Ecuador, Miami and Germany (where I am currently). Lars and I are traveling to Amsterdam next week..which I am highly looking forward to…will post pics and all that good stuff later. For now, here’s a graphic design goodie…

metro_logos.jpg

Variations of the letter M and other Metro logos of the world.

Most metros have logos or symbols to mark their station entrances, rolling stock, and printed matter such as maps or tickets. Since most metros around the world are indeed called ‘metros’ (only few are called subway, underground, U-Bahn, T-bana or something else), many metro logos are more or less fancy variations of the letter M.

As a graphic designer who has been working freelance since graduating in 2003, I have been through all the trials and tribulations that come with working for myself. For the first 2 years I was literally selling my soul, hellbent over backwards trying to get jobs and clients to add work to my portfolio. Craigslist was one of the sites I used to check on a daily basis for work, and although it helped me land a great long-term position with Yahoo!, most of the job postings were absolutely insulting to qualified graphic designers. And yes there were times I swallowed my pride and took these measly paying jobs, with clients from hell, because I was a newbie and felt like I needed the experience, but mostly because I was broke. I learned my lessons the hard way, realizing I was underestimating my own potential, but I soon learned that most designers experience this nonsense and agony when first starting out.

It’s not that I still don’t get the clients who try and haggle me after I give them an estimate, it’s that now I’ve learned the art of negotiation and I also don’t have a problem turning down work, especially if I get the feeling early on that this will be a difficult client to work with. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned and word of advice for freelancers: Let go of the cheap clients who cause you nothing but stress and headache and instead concentrate more on the ones who are easy to get along with, appreciate and respect what you do and are willing to pay you what you’re worth.

From time to time I’ll be offering free downloads to our readers of hi-res photos and designs to use for desktop backgrounds or whatever you like. They will always be original artworks or photos by me, Kat, and I’m happy to share with everyone. The only thing I kindly ask is to please not sell or distribute any of these for profit. Feel free to comment and let me know how you’ve used them.
These first two have a botanical theme. Click on images to view the larger download size.

The First Photoblog Post

What you see above is our first moblog / photoblog image (a picture I took of my screen, adding this category, ‘Photoblog’ - using the camera of my Nokia 6133 phone). Beginning Monday, August 20th, Kat and I will post photos in this category. It may be taken with our mobile phones, digital camera, iSight or even a scanned Polaroid, but it has to be originally taken by either one of us to be posted.

Enjoy and feel free to comment on our adventures.
